I would dearly love to believe that the person who wrote this is just spoofing us.

Overall, I like Lord of the Rings. However, I do feel that Tolkien kind of rips off Harry Potter in many ways. There are several parallels, such as elves, dwarfs, wizards, goblins, trolls, magic (especially invisibility), etc. Sauron is referred to as “Dark Lord” just like Voldemort is. There is also the elder white-haired bearded wizard who serves as a mentor, Gandalf, who is reminiscent of Dumbledore. Some of the character names are similar, such as Wormtongue as opposed to Wormtail, too. There is even a gigantic spider (Shelob) at the end of ‘The Two Towers’ that reminds one of Aragog from ‘Chamber of Secrets.’ I even noticed that the plots of both series begin with the protagonists’ birthday. Now I see that Tolkien, this unoriginal bastard, is coming out with The Hobbit in December. This would be fine, but why didn’t he just write this book first to begin with? I still like Lord of the Rings, though–don’t get me wrong–but I wonder if Tolkien has ever said in interviews whether he borrowed elements from Harry Potter. I’ll be watching the extended DVDs later this week and I think he’s featured on the commentary track, so I look forward to that.

Unfortunately, in view of the many people who just recently learned on Twitter than the sinking of the Titanic was an actual, historical event and not just another Poseidon Adventure, I’m having a hard time convincing myself.

Sex And The Single Elementary School Student

Perhaps this school should rethink what constitutes a sexual advance.

I have very little patience with zero-tolerance school policies for reasons that Denver attorney, Craig Silverman, states very well.

Denver attorney Craig Silverman said elementary school students have the same rights to free speech as adults as long as they understand and follow the rules. He said school policies should allow for exceptions.

“Sometimes when you go to a zero-tolerance policy, you end up with a zero-sense policy,” he said.

D’Avonte’s suspension comes as the Colorado Legislature considers a measure that would eliminate zero-tolerance discipline policies related to violence and weapons that were enacted after the Columbine High School shootings.

It’s a response to cases in which students have been punished for bringing fake guns or butter knives to school and doesn’t address sexual harassment policies. However, Sen. Linda Newell, the bill’s sponsor, said the measure would also direct school districts to consider alternative forms of discipline, such as remediation decided by a student’s peers, in all kinds of discipline cases.

Now it’s also true that this was a repeat offense, but surely the mother bears no blame. I mean, what mother wouldn’t let her six-year-old sing along with lyrics like this?

Wow! That is nearly as inspirational as this, don’t you think? And just as age-appropriate!

Okay, maybe not quite. Maybe D’Avonte’s mother, Stephanie Meadows, didn’t get the memo letting her know that being a parent sometimes means that you have to modify your own lifestyle. Or maybe she’s never heard that it’s sometimes okay to tell your children “no,” or that making your expectations for their behavior clear to them won’t scar their delicate psyches for life. Or maybe she doesn’t care.

So, yes, there’s plenty of scorn to be heaped for this story and everyone deserves a full measure.

The Most Amazing Coincidence!

This is such an incredible coincidence, I just have to share! I heard that Jay Carney claims to know three (3!!!) separate women named Hilary Rosen.

Imagine that! Out of the 40 or so women in the U.S. who share that name, he knows three (3!!!) of them. Think about it…there are almost 13,000 women in the U.S. named Jennifer Smith and I don’t know a single one, but Jay Carney knows three (3!!!) women named Hilary Rosen. How. Freaky. Is. That.

Allahpundit thinks Jay is lying, but that can’t be right, can it? I mean, I trust Jay to keep me up-to-date on all the breaking news from the Obama Administration. He would never lie to me, right?

(Sadly, it’s come to my attention that not everyone shares my high opinion of Jay. I’m crushed.)

Why Do Democrats Hate SAHMs?

Dang it! I was trying to find a photograph that accurately depicted what a stay-at-home mom does everyday, but I couldn’t find a picture of a mom folding laundry while cooking a nutritious meal, while nursing the baby, while driving her children to their respective sports practices, while scheduling a doctor’s appointment for her husband, while conducting a PTA meeting, while mowing the lawn, while paying bills, while shopping for groceries. So I made this instead.

Why all the fuss? Yesterday, Hilary Rosen, a Democrat strategist accidentally pissed off every SAHM in the country…even though some of them don’t know it yet, when she indiscreetly tweeted that Ann Romney, a SAHM of 5 boys, had never worked a day in her life.

Now, of course, I understand the point she was trying to make, although not the rationale behind it, but this is a hot button issue for SAHMs and it’s a horribly unfair bias/misconception that they’ve been dealing with for at least 30 years…the idea that caring for your own children full-time isn’t “real” work (now if you were caring for someone else’s as a low-paid daycare worker, that would be, you know, cool).

I’ve been both a SAHM and a working mom and I can say without hesitation that in my experience, being a SAHM is far more rewarding, and at least as much work as being a “working” mom. Did I mention the volunteer coordinators for every organization you or your children are involved in who call you for every volunteer position that opens up because “you don’t do anything else anyway?” Yes, these words or words very similar have been spoke to me. More than once. Over a span of years and by different people. I only mention this to point out why this is such a sensitive issue. I’m not bitter or anything.

It appears that liberals, if they were to be so foolish as not to abort a Down Syndrome child, would keep said child at home, locked in a closet, apparently, to preclude any possibility of offending their liberal friends with the distasteful sight. What other reason could there be for their persistent characterization of Sarah Palin’s insistence on including her son, Trig, in her daily activities as “waving that retard of hers around like a flag.”

In Chris Matthews’ world, it’s apparently urbane and hip and sophisticated and oh-so-cool to text raunchy, unsolicited photos of yourself to women half your age with whom you’ve have a previously casual, virtual relationship. As opposed to doing your best to live up to Christian ideals of behavior like being faithful to your wife which is, apparently, backward.

Mississippi Gets It Right
